Here at Eclectic At Home, we love an antique look that will make your interior design unique from the rest. A distressed look can be applied to just about anything you paint, without having to search for a vintage item in the first place. In this guide, we would like to show you how you can create an impressive antique finish with a little bit of DIY at home.
Once you have decided on the item you’d like to paint, remove all pieces that are not needed such as handles and other hardware. Before painting, give your item a light sanding with some sandpaper.
To paint, it is recommended to use a darker colour as the base and to create two layers. When the base coats are completely dry, paint a single layer of top colour and let it dry. You can also use spray paint if desired, but a regular paint and brush will work just as well.
3. Distress ItAfter waiting for the paint to dry, lightly sand the surface of your item with sandpaper or a sanding block remembering to include all of the edges. Create your desired look of distress then cover with a coat of Autentico wax.
With over 140 Autentico colours to choose from, you are sure to find the right colours to suit your taste within our selection. To create a distressed finish, we recommend finding a colour in our vintage chalk paints range for furniture and decorative items.
With these three simple steps, you can create a fabulous antique finish in no time at all. Suitable for just about any item, a distressed finish is a highly sought after look and certainly worth a try at home. The simple trick to remember is that if you can paint it, you can distress it!
